How to solve the error code 0x80070002: File not found in Windows 8.1

There are several ways to solve the error code 0x80070002: File not found in Windows 8.1:

  1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter: Go to Control Panel > Troubleshooting > System and Security > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
  2. Delete the Software Distribution Folder: Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all the files and folders inside it. Then restart your computer and try to update again.
  3. Check your antivirus software: Sometimes antivirus software can interfere with Windows updates. Disable your antivirus software temporarily and try to update again.
  4. Check your internet connection: Make sure you have a stable internet connection and try to update again.
  5. Reset Windows Update components: Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type the following commands one by one:
      net stop wuauserv
      net stop cryptSvc
      net stop bits
      net stop msiserver
      ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
      ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
      net start wuauserv
      net start cryptSvc
      net start bits
      net start msiserver
  6. Then restart your computer and try to update again.

  7. Perform a System Restore: If none of the above solutions work, you can try to perform a system restore to a previous point in time when your computer was working fine.
